The Benefit of Insurance When Planning For Your Funeral

Monica says the average funeral costs between five and seven thousand dollars.  That number goes up every year.  If for any reason you have special wishes for your funeral, that dollar amount just continues to increase.  It is not unheard of for a funeral to cost ten to fifteen thousand dollars.  So what can you do to help reduce the cost of your funeral?  A good option is funeral insurance.  Funeral insurance is also known as preneed insurance and can be invaluable in making sure that the financial burden of your funeral is not too great in comparison to what money you have left your heirs.

Funeral insurance is basically a policy you take out to cover the costs of your burial.  This includes the casket or urn, the site at which you wish to be buried, and any other funeral arrangements such as flowers and clothing in which you wish to be buried.  Many funeral homes have their own funeral insurance plans, so it is a good idea to visit a few funeral homes and discuss this option with the funeral director.

The key to finding good funeral insurance is to ask a lot of questions.  The more specific your question, the less ability the agent selling you the insurance policy has to create a loophole to pay out less money to your family or the funeral home once you have passed on.  It is also important to revisit your policy every few years to make sure that you still wish to have the same arrangements, that the policy covers current cost structures, and that your desired burial location is still available and will have room for several more years.

For many people, these are uncomfortable decisions and many well intentioned people wait too long to make arrangements.  It should be viewed as a positive experience instead of something to dread and avoid.  It will give you a sense of peace of mind and will allow your family to worry less about what happens to them financially after you pass away.  Planning is the key to everything in life, even death.
