Dental Health Insurance
Dental health insurance is not normally included in health plan coverage. If there is coverage for dental health, it is usually a separate plan altogether. The most expensive dental health plan is the direct reimbursement plan. Companies who offer direct reimbursement plans pool the money and allow any member of the plan to partake of the money when in need of dental health services based on the agreed upon coverage. The less costly plans are the managed care plans. Just like the health maintenance organization or HMO plan, dental managed care plans have a pool of dentists who provide agreed upon dental services. In return, members pay monthly premiums. The HMO dental insurance plan normally includes regular dental cleaning or prophylaxis and x-rays as part of the service (free of charge).

Another type of managed care plan is the Dental Preferred Provider Plan or Dental PPO. Similar to the medical PPO, it is an HMO-type plan except you have the option to get dental care from a dentist outside the network by paying extra. Dental indemnity insurance plans are the typical insurance plans that pay for a portion of your dental expenses in exchange for monthly premiums. There is no network of dentists to contend with because in the dental indemnity insurance plan, you can choose your own dental care provider. This type of health insurance plan is very specific on what is covered and it usual means preventive service where you get 100% coverage, restoration service at 80% coverage and orthodontics at 50% coverage.
