Calculating the disability Insurance amount

People often keep social security benefits for themselves in order to be able to cope up with any crises which may arise in their life. However when people fall sick or get prone to a certain disability, the social security does not cover a person’s illness. This is because the social security tends not be sufficient to cover the expenses incurred when facing a disability. In order to be able to cover the expenses of disability, a person is required to have disability income insurance. Once it is decided by you that you are going to be getting a disability insurance policy, all that you would be required is to decide as to how much benefit you would want to receive.

The chance of a person becoming sick and prone to diseases is quite high. The percentage of the risk is much higher than what presume it to be. According to a study, it was estimated that a person, 20 years of age has a 3 out of 10 chance of becoming sick and disabled before he/she reaches the retirement age. However the factors which affect the likelihood of a person becoming disabled are based on factors such as health, occupation and of course, age.

In order to decide how much money you would need for your disability insurance, the first thing you would have to do is calculate the money required. Most people find this calculation quite difficult however there is a certain way to carry it out. A simple way to calculate the amount of money needed would be to make use of a disability benefit worksheet. It is a worksheet which has two columns in it in which certain items need to be stated.

The two columns of the worksheet contain different types of information. In the first column, the estimated expenses are noted down which the person is likely to face while disable. The second column consists of the income the person is going to be earning during the time he/she is disabled. In order to calculate the amount of money you are likely to receive from your insurance company in times of a disability, subtract the amount in the first column with the amount in the second column. The resulting answer would be the amount of benefits you would be receiving.

When considering the expenses you will be incurring during your disability, make sure you remember to reduce the expense of things like transportation as you are unlikely to travel so much. It is also quite possible that clothing expenses would be reduced as well. Make sure that the estimate of expenses which you note down are not the expenses which you would face while healthy and going about your daily work.

When you have calculated the amount you need your insurance company to pay, make sure that you consider the tax factor. As your income will rise, your tax rate will also increase so make sure that you are aware of this fact before you go to your insurance agent.
